Zafarullah Jatak is the first Pakistani journalist to be killed this year.
A Pakistani journalist was shot dead at his home by unindentified gunmen on Sunday, according to local news reports.
Zafarullah Jatak, a correspondent for Urdu language daily Intekhab, was murdered in his sleep when assailants stormed into his house and open fired.
Police are investigating the killing but were unable to find a clear motive behind the murder.
The Consortium for Press Freedom (CPF) condemned the murder and called on the authorities to take action: “We strongly condemn this brutal killing which serves as a reminder for the challenging situation that Pakistani journalists face every day. The CPF calls on the Pakistan government to take immediate action to bring those responsible to justice and implement necessary changes to end the culture of impunity in Pakistan.”
Pakistan remains one of the deadliest countries in the world for media workers, and one where convictions are extremely rare.
